In the wake of Jane Goodall's passing, we need new beacons of hope. Katerina Mikula comes through in this heartfelt reflection on what it means to love a place, lose it, then discover its new life.
I have goosebumps after reading this beautiful, precisely-realized, and wonderful piece. We talk about writings being "inspiring"...for me, this deeply was. Appreciating how resilient we are is important. Thank you.
Your post about Fairy Creek was very eye-opening and informative. I had no idea the Canadian government was so ruthless about clear-cutting old growth and that so little of it remains in Canada. 😢
Thanks for reading and caring about the ancient trees.
Yes the Canadian government has a very effective PR psyop devision that works 24/7 to project an image of our government that is “inclusive”, “sustainable” and kind but in reality the violent colonialism this country was founded upon is still happening today.
The most recent gas lighting technique they use with regards to their primary forest decimating racket is they keep redefining and stretching the meaning of the term “old growth forest” by including tiny stunted old trees in the high alpine, and bogs etc as “old growth” forest not being clearcut so their numbers are always buffered by this slight of hand. Mean while, the most rare “high productivity” ancient old growth temperate rainforest sections left are targeted for pillaging while no one is looking (all while they preach about how “sustainable” they are).
How are things going down there with that Trump character attempting to cut down ancient trees for corporate profit? Are there any protests or blockades ?
Things are bad and about to get worse. Today I heard the U.S. Forest Service is ramping up logging operations in Oregon (despite government shutdown) due to executive orders by the current administration. However this will likely take some time to implement and will hopefully face many lawsuits.

I treasure the hope you ended with
Thanks you for educating us about the area.

This. This is why I stay grateful, make words, keep hope.
